It pays to be familiar with roofing warranties, especially when you’re buying a new roof. Not all warranty coverage is the same, and knowing what to look for can help you get the most of your new roof and even help you choose the right roofing contractor for the job.
Here are some of the important things you should know about roofing warranties.
Material and Workmanship Warranties
Despite differences in wording, roofing warranties should always have material and workmanship coverage. A material warranty, also known as factory or manufacturer’s warranty, covers roofing problems that may be caused by factory defects. Nearly every roofing product should at least have this level of coverage. The number of claims related to factory defects has steadily decreased over the past few years, thanks to strict quality checks. Note that manufacturers may require scheduled maintenance; otherwise, the warranty may be voided.
Workmanship warranty, on the other hand, covers roofing problems caused by installation errors, often fulfilled through the roofing company. Workmanship coverage is critical, as most roofing problems are rooted in poor installation. Because not every contractor offers the same kind of warranty coverage, reading and understanding the workmanship part of the roofing warranty is important. Note that some workmanship warranties exclude the disposal and replacement material cost.
